Abstract

Ultrafiltration becomes more popular in drinking and wastewater treatment today. It used individually or as a pretreatment for reverse osmosis. Practical experience has shown a high efficiency of suspended particles and microbial contamination removal with ultrafiltration method, in contrast to the removal of organic substances that is usually below the stated. It is an essential problem for water treatment of rivers of Dnieper basin. Their main characteristic and problem as well is high content of humic substances (HS) (5-16 mg O2/l). Water with high level of HS is unfit for using in manufacturing processes and for drinking purposes without any treatment. It has shown that membrane surface modification and combination of physical-chemical methods with ultrafiltration can increase the efficacy of HS removal and reduce their negative impact on the membrane surface.
